Overview

This is very useful in facial paralysis, severe headaches, dryness of nostrils and such other vatha-related diseases. A cap or head-band is fixed on the head and warm medicated oils are poured in it so that the oils stay on the head without flowing down for 15 to 60 minutes. This may be continued for 7 days.

An Ayurvedic medicinal technique called sirovasthi includes applying medicated oils or herbal concoctions to the skull. Sirovasthi literally translates to "retaining oil on the head." It is derived from the Sanskrit words "shira," which means "head," and "vasthi," which means "container." In Panchakarma, the Ayurvedic detoxification and rejuvenation therapy, it is one of the specialised treatments.

A leather cylinder cap is placed on the patient's clean-shaven head during Sirovasthi. This cap is firmly fastened to avoid any leaks. The cap is then filled with warm medicinal oil and left on the head for a predetermined amount of time. Deeply penetrating the scalp, the oil feeds the hair follicles, fortifies the roots, and fosters general scalp and hair health.

Sirovasthi is well known for its many advantages, which include reducing stress, anxiety, and headaches, promoting mental clarity, and improving the quality of sleep. Additionally, it helps in the treatment of scalp diseases, dandruff, premature greying of hair, and hair loss.

The length of time and frequency of Sirovasthi treatments vary based on the needs of the patient and the advice of an Ayurvedic physician. It is a profoundly soothing and revitalising therapy intended to bring harmony and balance back to the body and mind.
