Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in the joints gradually deteriorates. If the cartilage wears down completely, the bone will rub on the bone.
Osteoarthritis has often been referred to as a "wear and tear" disease. But besides the breakdown of cartilage, osteoarthritis affects the entire joint. It causes changes in the bone and deterioration of the connective tissues that hold the joint together and attach muscle to bone. It also causes inflammation of the joint lining.
Osteoarthritis worsens over time, often resulting in chronic Joint pain and stiffness which can become severe enough to make daily tasks difficult.
The smooth tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint, cartilage, is predominantly impacted by osteoarthritis, a chronic degenerative joint condition. This type of arthritis is the most prevalent and often worsens with time. Weight-bearing joints, including the hands, feet, knees, hips, and spine, are frequently impacted by osteoarthritis.
Joint pain, stiffness, and a decreased range of motion are symptoms of the illness, which is characterised by the degradation and eventual loss of cartilage. The surrounding tissues, such as ligaments, tendons, and muscles, may also be harmed as osteoarthritis worsens, leading to further pain and functional restrictions.
Age, heredity, obesity, prior joint traumas, and repetitive stress on the joints are some of the variables that contribute to the development of osteoarthritis. Although osteoarthritis cannot be cured, there are several treatment methods that attempt to reduce symptoms and enhance the quality of life. These could include dietary changes, exercise, painkillers, joint injections, assistive devices, and in extreme circumstances, surgical procedures such as joint replacement.
Osteoarthritis sufferers can have active and meaningful lives by reducing pain, maintaining the joint function, and preserving total mobility with early diagnosis and adequate management.
